Top 5 Craft Beer Pubs in London series – Craft Beer Company -Clerkenwell

London’s craft beer scene is booming and there are growing numbers of great pubs in the city. Jane Peyton wrote us a guide to the best craft beer pubs in London. Pub number three is Craft Beer Company – Clerkenwell
A burgeoning empire of Craft Beer Company pubs in London and Brighton, this was the first one to open in 2011. Until its sister in Covent Garden opened in 2014 and took the honour, this pub held the distinction for having the most beer taps in the UK. With around 37 taps split between cask and keg, and 150 bottles and cans in the fridges, the range changes so rapidly that you could order a drink and by the time it came to a second one, the tap may have run dry. That’s the allure of this 19th century boozer, never knowing what will be on offer but knowing it will be top quality. There is a reason why this beer lover’s heaven repeatedly earned the accolade of Rate Beer’s Best UK Bar 2011-2016.
Unsurprisingly the pub is hugely popular with after-work and destination drinkers so it does get crowded at certain times but as it is on a corner, and Leather Lane is narrow and not busy with vehicular traffic, people tend to spill on the street. If you are interested in London literary history, then Clerkenwell/Farringdon may intrigue you. These streets belong to Charles Dickens characters – Fagin’s den was nearby, David Copperfield traversed the area, and the Plornish family lived in Bleeding Heart Yard (the gruesome moniker relates to the name of a long-gone 16th century inn).
I have been in the cellar of this branch of the Craft Beer Company. It is extraordinary that such a cramped space could hold such a vast array of beers, and for the tap change-overs to happen so quickly. Huge respect to the always enthusiastic staff!
Cheers!
