Peated Scotch Ale, Switzerland
4.1
Another one from Birrificio Due Fusti 🇨🇭 The Belgian Ale didn't impress me, let's see if a Scotch Ale performs better. The glass is filled with sludgy, brown to dark brown beer. Carbonation behaves much more obediently here. A dense moussy head is born and grows two fingers tall. Retention is substantially long. The thick foam caps the beer tightly. Looks very attractive. Smoke and cured ham emanate to the nostrils. Peat is not easy to spot behind the curtain of smoke, especially when it's also roasted, but it is there. I can't get away from the impression of Islay. 😅🥃 Mama!! Smoke is colossal on the tongue! Not very cured-ham-like anymore but a tad sweet-leaning. Interesting as the smoky slam is not edgy as it could be. Roasted peat and light-piney dry hops season the thick heavy smoke. The body is medium. Not bad! The finish pushes the sensation to a bitter direction where the smokiness is too overwhelming. Whoaah. The aftertaste starts burning peat but the smoke is so thick that it can't see a thing. Eyes are wet. The mouthfeel is heavily smoky, somewhat heavy too, roasty, mellow and reasonably thick. First it's smooth but turns quickly increasingly husky. Can much be too much? This is most likely the smokiest beer I've had in Pint Please. I 🤎 the fact that this is unapologetic. It's also challenging, no question about it. Divisive for sure. This should deserve slow enjoyment when watching live fire in a cottage. Hurry only leads to a missed opportunity.
