Thomas Hardy's Ale: Golden Edition 50th Anniversary (2018)
13.0% Barley Wine
Amber coloured Barley Wine laden with bronze glints.
On the nose, straight away the bouquet has impact, intensity and complexity with notes of both candied and alcohol-soaked fruit, dried figs, fresh tobacco and chocolate, while a caramel sensation is perceived but remains in the background.
In the mouth, the initial sensation is of incredible density and softness, a silky warmth accompanying memories of bitter orange marmalade, dried fruit and chestnut honey. The finale provides a refreshing, slightly sharp hint that adds harmony and balance.
The vintage 2018 Golden Edition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Thomas Hardy’s Ale, first produced in 1968.

Sameahko, laihan näköinen tuotos. Todella kevyt hiilihappo missä tujakkaa makua. Karamellinen, katkera ja hieman mausteinen. Voisi sanoa viinimäinen.
Hieman viinainen aromi ei makua pilaa. Helppoa juotavaa mutta yhteen se jäisi. Hyvä tuote.

Full, velvety and sweet body.
Intense in flavor but manages to keep alcohol balanced and not overwhelming, adding to combination.
Dates, raisins, chocolate, sweet malts added with hints of vanilla and salt.
Really interesting, this one has nuances and depth.
My first barley wine and I'm a fan already, even when I haven't been so far a real fan of beers this strength.

Now, something intriguing. I love Barley Wines, especially their English versions. This is one. Vintage is 2018.
The bottles are numbered. Mine is 1307.
Oh my, this beer looks turbid. Lovely brown, astonishingly chestnutty. The carbonation is really impotent, almost flat. It produces a mere hair-thin lace ring on the top and then it's all gone.
The first inhale takes me almost in nirvana: intensive date, raisin, caramel, butterscotch, vanilla... No hops. This is a promise of delicacy. I hope. Milk chocolate and syrup join the enjoyment in smaller volumes.
The taste profile tries its best to meet the expectations. The immediate components include caramel, butterscotch, date, raisin and vanilla. Alcohol doesn't taste but doesn't shut away either. It's boldly present, the jacket unbuttoned. A powerful cocktail. However, the impression is not exactly as thick as I thought. And wished. And yes, the remaining elements of milk chocolate, cacao nibs and a sigh of cream.
The body is full. Or almost. The ABV should definitely deliver an even more robust impression. The end turns a couple of decimals sharper, by no means sharp though but not as velvety as before either. This is where the alcohol pops up above the surface and where the hoppy side is observable.
The mouthfeel is full, velvety, smooth, deep and desserty. Somewhat rich, too. And flat. At some point, I could have called this 'elegant' but the elegance shrinks toward the end. Strong, anyway, and intense. Lip-glueing. A slow sipper for sure. 🤎🤎🤎

Hyvin pehmeä omaan suuhun brittityylinen ale. Makeahko suussa, jotain rusina/toffeemaista maussa. Hiilihappoa ei ollut enää lainkaan jäljellä, mutta se ei kyllä tässä haittaakaan.
